Within a space three months I received four invitations by different people to different independent business summits where you will be taught on starting your own business. I expected something that will focus on proven business principles that one can judiciously apply expecting to have results later. In fact just on a particular week I got an invitation of such on Whatsapp asking me to be part of a business venture and investment. I obliged but still found out it is the same old thing I have been invited to.
What then is this business idea that keeps coming back like is my calling to do it? I am quite sure someone has already guessed what it is.
Network Marketing! Yes you were quite right.
There won’t be any need to go into the details of that since it is a popular concept in business strategy or in selling a product. Have you also noticed that such products are neither high-end consumer goods or neither will those at the Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP) be able to afford them? That is one major disadvantage about such products and why people like me are skeptical about joining.
Let me dwell a bit about bottom of the pyramid. These are people who are considered poor or whom the UN says live on less than $2 a day. They have a limitation in going for luxury goods and items and there is huge population of such people in Africa and other developing nations like India, South America, Asia, etc. So their population is already a market (huge one at that) for those who will understand their needs, capability, purchasing power and develop products that can fit into their taste and level. This is a whole new discovery I made some time ago even though I had wanted to start something small that is scalable over time and with constant product sales. A business that is able to offer a product that covers the various classes of people (low class, middle class and high class) has an unlimited potential to keep growing and expanding.
You can decide to call that a limitation of networking marketing businesses that are migrating to Africa. If you must succeed exceedingly here you must target the largest population of low or middle income earners by selling products that are within their purchasing power.
Going further on this, when I see the products that are sold by these companies I also observe they are mostly for wellness, healthy living, cosmetics, and are basically made from herbs. The raw materials used in making them can be found here in much abundance and I have been wondering why those products can’t be made here to target the huge population of poor people (whom I’m sure desire to live healthy). Someone will be skeptical about our business environment but the truth is there is no place where the business environment is perfect and working optimally. It only takes those who are determined to find opportunities in those limitations of doing business in your immediate environment.
The way our businesses are in Nigeria and Africa is such that people are more concerned on giving out an amount of money and getting something extra in return. Not many people want to sit down, plan, and develop a system that can run efficiently and effectively as a business model or entity. The ones who have achieved it are doing it greatly but the other group who want the cash at hand are more in number.
As much as I desire to be wealthy materially and have some good cash, I also long to build something with my mind, develop a system, a business model that people can learn from even after I’m gone.
