Politics has even domestic power.
We were in that traffic at Berger and wondering what was causing this unusual delay at 8:30 pm on a Monday morning. I tried manoeuvring my way without being scratched by these cab drivers that have no patience for any other road user. I couldn’t go back to initiate a good turning radius without my bumper getting stained by the green on this green coloured taxis but thank God, my Golf was able to fit in. With that, I was able to get to the front and at that point, it dawned on me that some mobile policemen had blocked the right stretch of the roundabout and forcing everyone to fit in on the left.
“How can these ones are here tonight”, I asked my tired self. Oh, a political party just had their convention (politics) and some security personnel were deployed for their protection (for just convention). And at 8:30 pm they were still under instruction to keep checking citizens who are eager to go home and rest after a long day and the first day of the week. I guess they have chosen their leaders and now as the election year draws nearer, one can imagine how many roads will be blocked on the campaign trail.
Did they even consult the public on the choice of their party leaders, who knows them and with the way many are jostling to occupy many few seats like the Party chairman, one wonders what vision all these contenders have different from each other? Whoever gets elected will play a major role for the next round of elections and of course, the consequences of such persons to the public never matter; what counts is the vested interest that enlarges them all sides including pot-bellies.
Thank God they ruling party even issued the approval to get the security personnel on duty. They might have thought they should just allow them after all they are brothers and sisters; same blood, same interests, identical feathers. The only difference is the nomenclature of the party.
The following day I left for work as God has enabled me to and while in transit you find this young man and woman both seated at the front and back of the taxi dozing and looking pale. A clear evidence that they didn’t get enough sleep. And with the rush to get taxis and buses at night, many citizens get home late even though they are in the capital city with no major signs of natural traffic jams except for the artificially created ones like last night. This politics is too powerful.
The more you ignore politics, the more you underrate or overrate them, the more you keep feeling the heat of their actions and inactions and including their omissions and deliberate oversights. If politics is not working for your good, then it is working for your ill; no midpoint, explanations to it just black and white. Your level as a business executive or a struggling business does not exclude you from this traffic jam. It can put your family under stress if they are expecting you early or if you have picked your children from school hoping to be a good father/mother and drive them home in your car.
This is a pointer that politics can have a tremendous effect on your kitchen and the other room affairs. Denying it is risky, accepting it is telling you the truth and doing something about it is emancipating yourself from their claws. You are a citizen.
