As the re-run election for the Okigwe Senatorial Seat and eight local government areas in Imo State, Nigeria draws closer, the All Progressives Congress in the state has raised an alarm over the plan of the Peoples Democratic Party to rig the election. The election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, 23rd July, 2016.
The state chairman of the APC, Dr. Hillary Eke while briefing newsmen at the state Secretariat on Wednesday named Ike Ekweremmadu (the Deputy Senate President), Prof. Maurice Iwu (former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission), Chief Emeka Ihedioha (immediate past Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives) as the arrow heads behind the plot.
Eke asserted that the electoral officer appointed to conduct the election is the cousin of Chief Ihedioha and that all the electoral officers selected for the election are all from one community in Enugu State at the instance of Ike Ekweremmadu.
Eke on maintaining that the APC is going to win at the polls also added that all the National Youth Service Corps members are equally from Enugu, also to act as Ekweremmadu has instructed. He called on INEC to act now when there is still time and assured that the APC has no plans to boycott the elections.
He went to accuse Ekweremmadu of being worried about Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, the APC Senatorial candidate seeing that he might replace him as Deputy Senate President.
On the other hand, a member of the PDP spoke in anonymity saying, “This is another ploy by the Imo APC to forestall the election. They vividly know that APC in the state has failed and that their candidates won’t make the election. Instead of them to accept defeat in advance, they are saying that we in the PDP are planning to rig the election.”
