In the last two weeks, the rumour of President Buhari’s death swept across the country. People were absolutely sure about their findings, they had done their investigation and had so much proof, you couldn’t argue otherwise. Certainly, that is no fault of theirs. Personally, I was shown a YouTube video that narrated the rumour with pictures, the video insinuated that the President had been flown to Mecca for burial… I watched it, I wasn’t told about it but of course the video was not believable to me, no faces were shown, just some blurry images. Within that time also, I heard two people say that the sale of his burial Aso ebi was already on in Lagos. Lagos people, is that true?
No doubt Nigerians had their reasons for whatever opinion they held on this issue, malicious as they might have been, Nigerians have been in a similar situation before (the case of late president Yar’Adua, we all know how that ended), no one wants to go through that magnitude of uncertainty again. While the president was incommunicado, the powers that be did not help the situation; they withheld relevant information from the public and instead kept making vague comments.
Although media reports showed pictures of some prominent Nigerians who visited the President in Abuja House, London, the general notion of Nigerians was that those pictures had been taken earlier, maybe on previous trips, we don’t trust our politicians anyway, those pictures could have been photoshopped for all we know. In an interesting turn of events however, the White House confirms a phone call to President Buhari! The same phone call that people did not believe was made to him. As always, there were questions, “how can we be sure there was actually a call?” “Was the call recorded like President Goodluck Jonathan’s call to the then President elect, Muhammadu Buhari?” “Why would a ‘racist’ president like Donald Trump call President Buhari even though he contributed to Hillary Clinton’s campaign against President Trump?” Questions upon questions. Thankfully, the White House confirmed the call with details of the conversation between both Presidents.
Now we know for sure that our president is alive, as a bonus to that, he even spoke to us, thanking us for our prayers (it doesn’t matter what the prayer was). Whether he has stayed too long on a medical trip or not, we are glad that he is “homesick” and will be visiting the country soon. There will be no need for his Aso ebi, certainly not on the event of his burial, the man who people trekked miles in support of will be back to continue the job he was elected to do. We patiently await his return.
